Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil (or, alternatively, olive oil)
  • 1 cup white onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger
  • 4 cups water (or vegetable broth)
  • 1 cup dried red lentils (rinsed and picked over)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 2 tablespoon tomato paste 

THERMOMIX METHOD

Peel and half onion and peel garlic and ginger, add to TM bowl and chop 3 seconds, speed 7

Scrape down side of bowl and add remaining, except tomato paste and only 3 cups of water – not 4.

Cook 20 mins, 100 degrees, speed 2, REV

Add tomato paste, cook further 5 mins, 100 degrees, speed 2 REV

Serve (will thicken upon standing)

STOVETOP METHOD

Chop onion and garlic and ginger

Fry in a little oil until translucent

Add remaining except tomato paste

Simmer approx 30 mins. 

Add tomato paste, cook further 10 mins

Serve with fresh corriander
